UTC has had recent success with certification of their latest wing navigation light. As a division of United Technologies, UTC has created a new interchangeable navigation light equipped with new state of the art features. Obtaining the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) not only from the US (FAA) but from the European Agency (EASA) as well. The new navigation lights have been set to be a retrofit to the Airbus A230 aircraft family. The composition of the light has enabled it to live a longer than usual and be more reliable for operators. For an initial goal to be able to enhance performance and reduce maintance cost for the lights.
The lights have been optimized with indicators to increase reliability upon use. A failure indication appears within 1000 miles of the lights lifespan coming to an end. The light has been built with a high-powered LED system containing two “redundant high-power LED systems.” With max longevity the navigation light has been tested to with stand up is up to 39000 hours of operating. A longer lasting LED technology has enabled for the light with stand humidity at a higher level.
